Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve put together some of the questions our lovely patients ask us most. If you still cannot find what you’re looking for, just head to our Blog  or our Contact Us page  — we’re always happy to help!

If you are missing a part of your face or body, there are several options available to help restore both appearance and function. The most suitable approach will depend on your individual situation and the reason for your facial or body difference. Options may include implant-retained prostheses, medical adhesives, mechanical retention (such as glasses, hairbands, or straps), or, in some cases, opting for no prosthetic treatment at all.

These options are typically discussed during your consultation with your surgical team before the operation, allowing you to make an informed decision. However, if this discussion didn’t take place or if you still have questions about the prosthetic rehabilitation, we offer a FREE consultation. Our team will take the time to review your case, explore all available options, and support you in finding the solution that best suits your needs.

Head to our Blog to learn more about facial and body prosthetics.

The lifespan of a prosthetic can vary widely depending on its type, materials, usage, and how well it is maintained. For example, artificial eyes could last up to 20 years if well cared for. In contrast, silicone prosthetics, such as facial and body prosthetics, usually have a shorter lifespan, ranging from 12 - 24 months. Smaller prostheses, such as nipples or other small silicone prosthetics, may only last a few months before needing replacement.

Several factors influence the longevity of your prosthesis, including the materials used, exposure to sunlight and heat, particularly for silicone, changes in your body (e.g., weight fluctuations, ageing, surgical changes), and your maintenance and care routine. All of these aspects will be discussed in detail during your initial consultation to ensure you are fully informed about your options and how to care for your prosthesis to maximise its lifespan.

In the UK, private facial and body prosthetic treatment costs can vary significantly depending on the provider, materials used, and the complexity of each case. NHS funding is available for all facial and body prostheses for eligible patients. However, many patients choose to go privately for faster access, more personalised care, or enhanced aesthetic outcomes. Private treatment costs typically range from a few hundred to several thousand pounds, depending on your specific needs, the complexity of the case and whether it is your first prosthesis or a remake.

At Engreco Healthcare, we are a dedicated prosthetic clinic with extensive experience in both facial and body prosthetics. Having an in-house laboratory and  managing these cases routinely, we are able to offer high-quality, custom-made solutions at accessible fees. We believe in full transparency, so we invite you to view our detailed price list here.

In many cases, yes - most private insurance providers will cover prosthetic treatments, particularly when they serve a health-related function. While some of our treatments may be considered cosmetic, many also offer significant health benefits. Dental and medical insurers often cover treatments that provide functional or preventive benefits, so we recommend discussing your specific case with your insurer. We are happy to assist by completing any documentation required to support your claim.

While we are not currently registered to accept direct payment through insurance, we are actively working to partner with major insurance providers to make this process even easier in the near future. In the meantime, you are welcome to pay directly and submit your claim to your insurer for reimbursement. We’ll provide all necessary supporting forms and invoices to assist with your funding request. We’re committed to making high-quality care accessible, and that includes helping you navigate your funding options.

Yes, facial and body prosthetics are fully covered by the NHS as part of public healthcare. However, with increasing waiting times, staffing shortages, and limited access to premium materials, many patients choose to seek private care. Going private often means faster access to treatment and more personalised care, tailored to your individual needs - when you need it, and as often as you need it.

Your well-being is our top priority. While we proudly offer private services for those seeking timely and bespoke solutions, we are equally committed to supporting informed patient choices. If you prefer to pursue NHS treatment, we are happy to guide you and refer you to your nearest NHS provider.

It’s completely natural to wonder if your prosthesis will look fake. At Engreco Healthcare, all our facial and body prostheses are custom-made using medical-grade silicone, carefully colour-matched to your unique skin tone and contoured to reflect your natural anatomy. Our goal is always to create the most seamless and lifelike result possible. However, it’s important to understand that a prosthesis is, by nature, a foreign object - an attempt to replace something irreplaceable.

No matter how skilled the craftsmanship, it cannot replicate the aesthetic perfection or biological function of your own skin. Over time, the silicone will also degrade and lose colour, which is why prostheses need to be replaced periodically. Accepting the permanent loss of a part of your body is a deeply personal journey, and no prosthesis can fully undo that. That said, we take great pride in our ability to create prostheses that blend beautifully and naturally with your body, offering not just a physical restoration, but a sense of wholeness and confidence.

No, we do not offer any treatments that are designed to be painful or cause discomfort. In addition to traditional techniques, we use advanced 3D technology to make processes like impression-taking as smooth and comfortable as possible. Your comfort and wellbeing are always our top priority. We’re here to make your journey as easy and stress-free as possible.

In some cases, local anaesthesia may be recommended to ensure a completely pain-free experience. If this applies to you, our team will discuss it with you during your consultation and answer any questions you may have.

The best maxillofacial prosthetist is ultimately determined by you - the patient. It’s about who you feel most comfortable and confident with to deliver the results you need. There’s no universal “best,” as this depends on factors like aesthetic outcome, treatment style, communication, and clinical skill.

In the UK, maxillofacial prosthetists are regulated by the General Dental Council (GDC), the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and the Institute of Maxillofacial Prosthetists and Technologists (IMPT). These bodies uphold high standards and maintain registers of qualified professionals. Some practitioners also earn accredited fellowships, recognising advanced expertise and excellence in the field.

At Engreco Healthcare, our team includes highly qualified professionals registered with all three governing bodies. We combine clinical precision, artistic skill, and compassionate care to deliver outcomes you can trust.
